Sewanee Guitar Festival
The headliners for this festival will be Peruvian American classical guitarist Jorge Caballero performing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in Guerry Auditorium, and Romanian classical and flamenco guitarist Silviu Ciulei with the Maharajah Flamenco trio performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, also in Guerry. Preceding these concerts, there will be a Sewanee faculty concert in St. Luke's Chapel 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, with William Yelverton, professor of guitar, and Peter Povey, professor of violin. The second half of this opening concert will feature the jazz guitar duo of Chip Henderson and Andy Reiss. Henderson is a well-known jazz guitarist and educator; Reiss is best known for his work with Vince Gill's Grammy Award-winning group the Time Jumpers.
Jorge Caballero is one of the greatest virtuoso classical guitarists in the world today. His programs are unique, as they often contain monumental transcriptions of music originally written for other instruments, including keyboard and orchestral works. He is the First Prize winner of the Naumburg and Tokyo International Competitions.
Silviu Ciulei is both a virtuoso classical guitarist and flamenco guitarist and singer. He has won a number of classical guitar competition awards since coming to America in 2004 to study at MTSU. While on tour in Romania, William Yelverton met Silviu as a high school student and immediately recognized his amazing talent. Silviu was awarded MTSU's first international music scholarship and went on to complete a doctorate in guitar performance from Florida State University.
The concert is cosponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Sewanee Performing Arts Series.
